ADMISSIONS 2016



Admission is open for (i) Research [Ph D / M Tech (Research)] (ii) Courses [M Tech/M Des/M.Mgt],  (iii) Ph D (Integrated), and (iv) External Registration Programmes (Ph D) at the Institute.  Eligibility criteria, specialization, areas of research and other details are available from the dropdown menu at the IISc website (http://www.iisc.ernet.in    click on Admissions → Research programs → Ph D → Information Brochure → Eligibility Criteria → Research programme  [Ph D / M Tech (Research)].

Candidates who are yet to complete their qualifying examinations and expect to complete all the requirements for the degree by end of July 2016 (including all examinations, project dissertation, viva-voce etc.) are also eligible to apply provided they can furnish the necessary certificates by October 31, 2016.

 I.  RESEARCH PROGRAMMES [Ph D/M Tech (Research)]

Ph D in Science Faculty: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biochemistry, Ecological Sciences, High Energy Physics, Inorganic & Physical Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematics, Microbiology & Cell Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Reproduction, Development & Genetics, Neurosciences, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Solid State & Structural Chemistry.
M Tech (Research) and Ph D in Engineering Faculty: Aerospace Engineering, Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science  & Automation, Earth Sciences, Electrical Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Systems Engineering, Instrumentation, Management Studies, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nano Science and Engineering, Product Design & Manufacturing, Sustainable Technologies, and Computational and Data Sciences – (Computational Science Stream and Computer Systems Stream).
Ph D in Interdisciplinary areas: BioSystems Science and Engineering (offered by Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering), Energy (offered by Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research), Mathematical Sciences (offered by IISc Mathematics Initiative), Nanoscience and Engineering (offered by the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering), Water Research (offered by Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research).


ELIGIBILITY
Candidates possessing a minimum  of second class in the following degrees are eligible to apply:               
  
Bachelor’s or Master's degree in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences; or Master’s degree in Science in an appropriate field,  or  Master’s in Economics, Geography, Social Work, Psychology, Management, Commerce, Operations Research, Computer Science/ Application as applicable to the respective departments.

Mandatory: Qualifying in one of the following appropriate national tests with validity as on 1st August 2016: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; UGC-NET for JRF; DBT JRF; ICMR JRF; JEST 2016; NBHM Screening Test 2016; GATE 2015/ 2016; INSPIRE Fellows (for Ph D).

ME/ M Tech/ M Sc(Engg)/ M Des. or MS or MBA (post BE/B Tech) degree holders who wish to apply for Ph D in the departments in Engineering Faculty must have qualified in any of the above mentioned exams prior to their Master’s studies. 

Master's degree holders in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences - these candidates who wish to apply for Ph D in the departments in Science Faculty must have qualified in GATE/JRF/GPAT prior to their Master’s studies.

 II COURSE  PROGRAMMES [M Tech/M Des/M Mgt]

 

a.1. Master of Technology (M Tech) in (1) Aerospace Engineering, (2) Chemical Engineering, (3) Civil Engineering,        (4) Computer Science  & Engineering, (5) Communication & Networks, (6) Electrical Engineering, (7) Instrumentation, (8) Mechanical Engineering, (9) Materials Engineering, (10) Microelectronic Systems, (11) Signal Processing, (12) Systems Science & Automation,  (13) Transportation & Infrastructure Engineering, (14) Climate Science, (15) Computational Science, (16) Earth Science, (17) Electronic Systems Engineering and (18)  Nano Science & Engineering.


 



ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor's degree in appropriate field of Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with valid GATE score are eligible to applyor Master’s degree in Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Instrumentation, Electronics or Master’s in Computer Application as applicable to the respective departments.

For the M Tech programmes at serial numbers 1 to 13, selection will be based on valid GATE 2015 / 2016 score, whereas for the M Tech programmes at serial numbers 14 to 18 short listing will be done based on a valid GATE score followed by an aptitude test and interview.


a.2. Sponsored candidates from Defence, DRDO, BARC, ISRO, NAL, KSRTC, BMTC, BDA, PWD and CPRI applying for the Sponsored course programme should compulsorily fill in the online application form and submit the printed version, in duplicate, on or before March 24, 2016.

b. Master of Design (M Des) at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture with valid GATE / CEED scores are eligible to apply.

Short listing will be done based on a valid GATE / CEED score followed by a Design Aptitude Test and interview. Selection will be based on the performance in the Design Aptitude Test and interview. 


c. Master of Management (M Mgt)

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with a valid GATE/CAT/GMAT scores are eligible to apply.

Short listing will be based on a valid GATE / CAT /GMAT scores followed by a group discussion and interview. Selection will be based on the performance in the group discussion and interview.

 

 Note:IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.



III Ph D (Integrated) PROGRAMMES 

in (1) Biological Sciences, (2) Chemical Sciences, (3) Physical Sciences  and (4) Mathematical Sciences.

ELIGIBILITY

 Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in B Sc or equivalent degree in Physical, Mathematical, Chemical, Biological Sciences (including Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences) are eligible to apply.

 BE / B Tech degree holders who qualify in Mathematics/Mathematical Statistics paper in JAM are eligible to apply only to Mathematical Sciences discipline, and those who appear in Biotechnology paper in JAM are eligible to apply to Biological Sciences discipline.

For the disciplines at serial numbers 2, 3 and 4 the short listing will be based on JAM 2016 score followed by an interview, whereas for the discipline at serial number 1 selection will be based on JAM 2016 score only.  Candidates who have cleared JEST 2016 and are seeking admission in the Physical Sciences stream are also eligible to apply; the short listing of such candidates will be based on the JEST 2016 score followed by an interview.

Note: Candidates who are taking Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT) paper in JAM 2016 need not fill IISc online application, they must only give the IISc option in the JAM website after the JAM results, as the selection will be only through JAM.


IV  EXTERNAL REGISTRATION PROGRAMMES (ERP)

ERP is offered for working professionals from (1) R&D Organizations / Industries  and (2) Faculty members from Engineering, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges/ Universities, recognized  by the appropriate government agencies. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organizations. The departments will decide on whether they will admit ERP candidates into their Ph D programmes.




ELIGIBILITY

The required qualifications remain the same as for the regular candidates. Further, the candidate should have completed two years of full time employment in the present organization.

Desirable: Qualifying in one of the national exams: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, GATE, NBHM, etc.

Selection will be based on performance in the interview to be conducted at IISc.

Reservation for OBC/SC/ST/Person with disability (PWD) and Kashmiri-Migrant(KM) candidates: As per the Government of India regulations. Grade/Class of qualifying examination is relaxed to a “pass class” for SC/ST candidates.

Scholarships:  All the regular students (except M.Mgt students) who join the Institute are eligible for scholarship from CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ MHRD/ AICTE/ DAE (NBHM). Scholarships from many Indian and multinational agencies, and business houses are also available for meritorious students.
