Advertisement for Admission to Ph.D Program in Information Technology (RET) 2016

 Applications are invited for admission to the A. K Choudhury School of Information Technology, University of Calcutta (JD-2, JD Block, Sector III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 700098) for Ph.D. Course and subsequent research work leading to Ph.D. degree in Information Technology. Candidates who wish to pursue research work through this School should apply in the prescribed proforma by paying Rs. 100/- through a challan available through different University Cash counters. The proforma for application is available in the University website. The challan is to be duly forwarded through the Coordinator, A. K Choudhury School of Information Technology. The completed application form with a copy of the paid challan is to be submitted in the office of the Coordinator by March 11, 2016. At present 20 Ph.D. students (reservation is applicable as per the West Bengal State Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2013) will be taken, if available. The allocation of supervisor will also be on the basis of this interview (see the University website for the areas on which research is carried on here). The eligible candidates will have to appear in a written MCQ examination of 1-hour duration followed by interview to be held in this Department which will be informed to the candidates after the initial screening process. The syllabus of this examination is the M. Tech. (Information Technology) syllabus of this University including that for all the elective papers. However, those candidates who have already passed UGC/ CSIR(JRF) examinations /NET /SET /SLET /GATE /Teacher Fellowship or equivalent examinations or passed the M. Tech./M.E. degree in Information Technology or equivalent examination need not appear at the written examination and can directly appear at the interview.


Eligibility Criteria: Candidates with the following background may apply for enrollment to the Ph.D. program in the department: M. Tech. or M. E. in IT/CSE/CS/Electronics or equivalent, M. Sc. in Computer and Information Science/CS/Physics/Applied Physics/Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Bio Informatics/ Biophysics and Molecular Biology or M.C.A or B. Tech./B.E. in IT/CSE/CS/Electronics or equivalent as per the University regulation.

The relevant Ph. D. rules for B. Tech./ B.E. students would be applicable as per the University Norm.
The candidates having final degree of M.E./M.Tech. , B.Tech. and M.C.A. are to apply for enrollment in the Ph.D. (Tech.) program and the candidates having the final degree of M.Sc. has to enroll for the Ph.D. (Sc.) program.

M.C.A. candidates applying for Ph. D. Tech. program would have to follow the same rules applicable for B. Tech./B.E. Candidates for registration.

All the relevant rules regarding equivalence of degree obtained from other universities would have to be complied with including endorsement by the Ph. D. committee.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum  of second class in the following degrees are eligible to apply:               

  

Bachelor’s or Master's degree in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences; or Master’s degree in Science in an appropriate field,  or  Master’s in Economics, Geography, Social Work, Psychology, Management, Commerce, Operations Research, Computer Science/ Application as applicable to the respective departments.

Mandatory: Qualifying in one of the following appropriate national tests with validity as on 1^st August 2016: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; UGC-NET for JRF; DBT JRF; ICMR JRF; JEST 2016; NBHM Screening Test 2016; GATE 2015/ 2016; INSPIRE Fellows (for Ph D).

ME/ M Tech/ M Sc(Engg)/ M Des. or MS or MBA (post BE/B Tech) degree holders who wish to apply for Ph D in the departments in Engineering Faculty must have qualified in any of the above mentioned exams prior to their Master’s studies. 

Master's degree holders in an appropriate field of Engineering/Technology/Architecture/ Medicine/ Agriculture/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences - these candidates who wish to apply for Ph D in the departments in Science Faculty must have qualified in GATE/JRF/GPAT prior to their Master’s studies.

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor's degree in appropriate field of Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with valid GATE score are eligible to apply; or Master’s degree in Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Instrumentation, Electronics or Master’s in Computer Application as applicable to the respective departments.

For the M Tech programmes at serial numbers 1 to 13, selection will be based on valid GATE 2015 / 2016 score, whereas for the M Tech programmes at serial numbers 14 to 18 short listing will be done based on a valid GATE score followed by an aptitude test and interview.

a.2. Sponsored candidates from Defence, DRDO, BARC, ISRO, NAL, KSRTC, BMTC, BDA, PWD and CPRI applying for the Sponsored course programme should compulsorily fill in the online application form and submit the printed version, in duplicate, on or before March 24, 2016.

b. Master of Design (M Des) at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of second class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture with valid GATE / CEED scores are eligible to apply.

Short listing will be done based on a valid GATE / CEED score followed by a Design Aptitude Test and interview. Selection will be based on the performance in the Design Aptitude Test and interview. 

c. Master of Management (M Mgt)

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent degree with a valid GATE/CAT/GMAT scores are eligible to apply.

Short listing will be based on a valid GATE / CAT /GMAT scores followed by a group discussion and interview. Selection will be based on the performance in the group discussion and interview.

 

 Note:IIMs have no role either in the selection process or in the conduct of the programme.

III Ph D (Integrated) PROGRAMMES 

in (1) Biological Sciences, (2) Chemical Sciences, (3) Physical Sciences  and (4) Mathematical Sciences.

ELIGIBILITY

 Candidates possessing a minimum of first class in B Sc or equivalent degree in Physical, Mathematical, Chemical, Biological Sciences (including Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences) are eligible to apply.

 BE / B Tech degree holders who qualify in Mathematics/Mathematical Statistics paper in JAM are eligible to apply only to Mathematical Sciences discipline, and those who appear in Biotechnology paper in JAM are eligible to apply to Biological Sciences discipline.

For the disciplines at serial numbers 2, 3 and 4 the short listing will be based on JAM 2016 score followed by an interview, whereas for the discipline at serial number 1 selection will be based on JAM 2016 score only.  Candidates who have cleared JEST 2016 and are seeking admission in the Physical Sciences stream are also eligible to apply; the short listing of such candidates will be based on the JEST 2016 score followed by an interview.

Note: Candidates who are taking Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT) paper in JAM 2016 need not fill IISc online application, they must only give the IISc option in the JAM website after the JAM results, as the selection will be only through JAM.

IV  EXTERNAL REGISTRATION PROGRAMMES (ERP)

ERP is offered for working professionals from (1) R&D Organizations / Industries  and (2) Faculty members from Engineering, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary, Medical Colleges/ Universities, recognized  by the appropriate government agencies. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organizations. The departments will decide on whether they will admit ERP candidates into their Ph D programmes.

ELIGIBILITY

The required qualifications remain the same as for the regular candidates. Further, the candidate should have completed two years of full time employment in the present organization.

Desirable: Qualifying in one of the national exams: CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF, ICMR JRF, GATE, NBHM, etc.

Selection will be based on performance in the interview to be conducted at IISc.
